At Hanalee, we design products for vintage iPods and regularly hear software questions from customers on Etsy and eBay.
Rather than repeat recommendations from other websites, we’re testing the leading iPod applications ourselves using real hardware.
Before You Download Third-Party Software
If you’re using a modern Mac, you may not need third-party software at all.
Apple still supports most click-wheel iPods using the built-in Music app and Finder. If your goal is simply to sync music you own—such as MP3s, imported CDs, or purchased songs—Apple’s software may be all you need.
Third-party software becomes useful when you want to copy music from an iPod, recover a lost library, transfer playlists to a new computer, or perform tasks beyond basic syncing.
The reviews below compare the most popular iPod software and explain when each offers an advantage over Apple’s built-in tools.
